Secure digitalization creates advantages for the maritime sector

Freedom, adventure – and the need to digitalise

The only operational entity with a standardised and secure platform for digital maritime services based on the Maritime Connectivity Platform, enabling all connected operators to find each other and explore each other’s services in a reliable process.

Seafaring is part of human history and development. From ancient canoes and the first circumnavigators of the globe to the huge vessels of today, the thirst for adventure and freedom that drove our ancestors to leave the safety of their shores to sail towards the horizon is alive and well today.

The independent role of the captains, however, combined with a complex international regulatory framework, means that shipping and digital maritime services have long lacked common standards and platforms.

Despite not having been digitalised at the same rate as other sectors, secure digitalisation is now the necessary way forward – for safer seas, smarter international logistics, less climate impact and a smaller ecological footprint on our common seas.

This is where Navelink and Combitech come in.

Combitech’s role is to develop and operate the Navelink platform, and we have been involved from the beginning, from idea and concept to a unique system. We contribute to the technological development of a number of major international suppliers with this platform. It is a transformative journey, with the goal of being a part of digitalising the marine sector.

Navelink – the enabler for a safe and secure digitalization of the maritime sector

Navelink, an international non-profit consortium, is the only operational entity in the world that offers a common, standardised and secure platform for digital maritime services based on the Maritime Connectivity Platform.

Secure digital identification at sea is a fundamental principle and is provided by Navelink’s Maritime Identity Register (MIR). The Maritime Service Registry (MSR) enables all connected operators to find each other and explore each other’s services in a reliable process.

Today, Navelink is used by coastal states, ports and ship operators, shipping companies and other maritime stakeholders worldwide. Over 150 services are published on the platform, and the number of services and connected users is constantly increasing.

For example, port synchronisation services ensure that ships don’t have to wait for berthing. Other services that can be found through the MSR are pilotage, monitoring and warning services. And, of course, weather services for optimising routes to save fuel and time.

Shipping is just as vulnerable to cyberattacks as other sectors. Since the international regulatory framework is complex, individual actors must be able to trust each other. That’s why maritime digitalisation must be secure and scalable – it’s a prerequisite.
